We expected Penang to be more expensive than Ipoh, but April turned out differently. Staying in one place, cooking most of our meals, and exploring at an unhurried pace helped keep our spending surprisingly low.

We explored George Town over several outings, wandering through old clan jetties, historic streets, colorful mansions, small museums, and unexpected corners. Rather than trying to see everything, we returned several times, discovering a little more of the city each time.

A month in Tanjung Tokong gave us more than a place to stay. Between morning swims, neighborhood walks, temple visits, unexpected monkey encounters and forest trails, Penang slowly became a place we could call home.

In March, we moved from Vietnam to Malaysia, basing ourselves in Ipoh for most of the month. Our slow travel approach kept costs manageable, even in this more expensive Southeast country.

Taiping wasn’t love at first sight. But over just twenty-seven hours, unexpected encounters, historic buildings, tropical gardens and a few surprises revealed a city with layers of character. We arrived without high expectations — and left wishing we’d had more time.

We came to Pangkor Island expecting a quiet beach escape. We found a surprisingly busy beach town, a magical beach at night, an unusual temple and a secret rocky corner that seemed perfect. But Pangkor had a few more surprises in store for us.

We came to Cameron Highlands for cooler weather, mountain trails and tea plantations. Instead, we found slippery trails, unexpected detours, moss-covered forests, tea terraces, wild chayote and some of the best strawberries we had ever tasted.

Ipoh revealed its stories slowly — through the people we met, historic buildings, colourful lanes, and temples hidden among limestone cliffs. During our month in the city, we discovered how its multicultural past, everyday life, and dramatic landscape come together to create a place worth wandering through.

Ipoh became our first Malaysian home. Over four weeks, we learned to navigate tropical city life, discover new foods, spot wildlife from our window, and experience the cultures and traditions that shape everyday Malaysia.

After four weeks in Hoi An, we expected Da Nang to be just another beach city. Instead, we discovered ancient Champa history, mystical caves, sunrise walks, bustling fish markets, Monkey Mountain, and a dragon breathing fire into the night sky.
