Malaysia surprised us.

It felt modern, comfortable and remarkably easy to travel through, yet its three major cultures remained distinct, each preserving its own traditions, food and character — a pot that never quite melts. At the same time, wildlife seemed never far away, even in the cities.

For a relatively young country, independent only since 1957, Malaysia has developed rapidly while retaining a fascinating mix of cultures and landscapes. We found ourselves enjoying both its modern comforts and the unexpected wildness just beyond them.
